Jelly bean-tini

Let me start of with a bit of an explanation for this concoction.

My brother-in-law, Matt, is without a doubt one of the funniest people I know. He's also incredibly neurotic and obsessive about certain things, which is why, when he decided to buy some jelly beans, he didn't half-ass the job.

Apparently he purchased about ten varieties of easter jellybeans, and did a blind taste test with my sister. The result was that Sweet Tart jellybeans had the best texture AND flavor.

When he told this story to Kevin and me earlier this year, we rolled our eyes and nodded our heads. Later, in the car, we discussed how insane he was. But when I saw a bag of them at the store, I bought them on a whim.

Oh.

My.

God.

From March-April, Kevin and I were averaging about 2 bags a week. I would make several trips to the convenience store during my lunch breaks to get my fix, and all of my teeth fell out. Ok, I lied about the last part, but I am not lying about the intense jelly bean cravings.

For example, this is one of my victory photos after an especially impressive Rite-Aid haul.  And to put it into perspective, this was my pre-easter stash. The Monday following Easter Sunday I went into full-out panic mode, and drove around to every store, buying out their supplies to stock up on my beans. I managed to score about 15 bags, hopefully enough to last me until Easter.

And if you think that's bad, my brother-in-law is hoarding over 30 bags of these.

I'm not proud of this addiction, and went I look at the cupboard overflowing with candy, I'm a little ashamed. And when you have over 12 pounds of sugar, you start thinking of things to do with it.

Hence, the jelly bean-tini.

My precious beans, separated by colors. Because us neurotic people can't just eat things, are you crazy? We have to organize them! (I don't organize entire bags by color, just handfuls at a time.) And in case you're wondering, yes, I do eat them in a specific order. Starting with my least favorite, you go Orange, Yellow, Blue, Purple, Pink, and Green.

So the jelly bean-tini came about because I was making cocktails for myself and my mother, and thought it would be cute to skewer jellybeans and stick them in the drink as a stirrer/decoration. Lo and behold....it was adorable.

And it satisfies both of my addictions: Jelly beans...

and more jelly beans 😉

To make my yummy blue drink, you'll need UV blue and lemonade. I'm not a mixologist, so I don't know if this is already a drink or not, but it was what I had on hand awhile ago, and its a perfect summer drink. Sweet, and a little bit tart...just like the jellybeans.

And if you're wondering why the jellybeans are on a skewer instead of in the drink itself, well...

This turned really gross, really fast. Nothing like floating jelly bean particles in your drink to quench your thirst.

So mix up a colorful cocktail, stab some jellybeans, and satisfy your sweet tooth.

Thanks, Matt, for introducing me to the greatest jelly beans ever!

What's your favorite cocktail? Or, do you have any embarrassing candy addictions? Let me know so I don't feel so alone!!!

  1. These drinks are so cute! I've never tried these Sweet Tart jelly beans before, but they sound awesome...guess I'll have to stock up next Easter. 🙂

First of all, I am honored to be recognized by someone who has such a potential for greatness in all things culinary. Sarah, I am so proud of you -- your diverse interests and excellence in all of them prove that you can master anything you desire. Upon reading the post, I was a little taken aback by being called "neurotic" -- after reading further, however, I realized how appropriate a description it was. I was also amazed at how my sister-in-law summed up my idiosyncrasies in a paragraph, something I've been struggling, and unable, to do for a lifetime. Tracy, with all due respect, please do not try Sweet-Tart jelly beans next Easter -- that will mean much less for us hoarders.

First of all, let me congratulate you on the photography!!! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I'm not a big jelly bean fan (much more of a chocolate girl) but I'm always up for a good Martini...can't wait to try this! Maybe I can convince my neurotic husband to share some of his stash so we can try out this recipe. Thanks for the idea 🙂
