Doctor who, BBC, Matt smith, David Tennant, Dr. Who, sci fi, cocktail, drink, sonic, screwdriver, alcoholic, nerd, geek, dork

Disclaimer: I have been attempting for some time now to keep my blog from falling into a single niche...one of geekiness. But I cannot hold back any longer, I will be posting a lot of nerdy things in the upcoming weeks, and if that's not something you're interested in, well, maybe just appreciate the amount of work that goes into creating these dorky meals!

Doctor Who has, and will continue to be, my favorite show for a long, long time. I was first introduced to it by Netflix, when it kept recommending it to me based on my preferences. Within episodes, I was hooked.

Like the X-files (an old favorite of mine, I own all 9 seasons and both movies), the show has everything. Danger, adventure, monsters, aliens, romance, humor, and of course, attractive male leads :)

I am in love with the current doctor, played by Matt Smith. But my doctor has always been David Tennant.

Ironically enough, when I started working with Kevin, he was too shy to initiate conversation. And, being the newbie, I was too intimidated by his lush beard to talk to him. I mean, he could have been like 40 or something. But then he showed up to work wearing a Matt Smith shirt, and I pretty much refused to leave him alone after that. And we've been dating for over a year now, so thanks Doctor Who!

It was perfect that his spring break coincide with with the start of this season of Doctor Who! And we decided that in preparation for the big night, we would whip up some awesome themed goodies. I'll spread the rest of them out to last the season, but here's one that will certainly whet your appetite...

Chag Sameach, everyone!

For the goyim in the room, that means happy passover. Yes, it's that wonderful time of year, the time we all look forward to ever so much. The time where we can't eat bread.

Now, I'm not what you would call deeply religious.  I consider myself more spiritual, if you must know. But the one part about Judaism I will always embrace is the food.

matzoh, matzo, matza, matzah, cracker, passover, pareve, kosher, recipe, family, easy, fun

So Passover remains my favorite holiday, mostly because of the matzo ball soup. And despite the matzo.

Oh, matzo. You dry, tasteless, crumbly cracker, you. You're good for the first day, but by the end of the week I want to punch you. But of course that would just add more crumbs to the steadily growing pile on my floor, so I must refrain.

So what happens when you accidentally purchase 5 boxes of matzo? You simply have to come up with creative ways to use it. ...continue reading

Italian, pastry, French, homemade, cream puff, canoli, eclair, pudding, custard, kid, friendly, fun, easy, delicious, party, dessert, snack, fancy, chocolate, vanilla, Villa Italia, Schenectady

Not only have I not been eating healthy these first three months of 2013, but I'm eating downright terribly. It's not the lack of good food, it's probably the abundance of bad food that's going to kill me in the end.

One particular weakness of mine is Italian pastries. Kevin and I found the BEST Italian pastry shop in Schenectady, NY, called Villa Italia. We figure that since we only see each other once or twice a month, we have a right to indulge in as many cream puffs, cannolis, eclairs, and cookies as we can fit into our stomachs. It doesn't leave us feeling too great about ourselves, but oh my god are they delicious.

So since I had a three week period where I didn't drive to beautiful (ha!) Schenectady, I figured I had to get my fix the old-fashioned way: by making them from scratch. And you know what? It was not nearly as difficult as I had imagined. ...continue reading

I would like to dub this post: IT TASTES WAY BETTER THAN IT LOOKS! As a perfectionist I battled with myself over whether or not to post this recipe, because the meal isn't super sexy. But it tastes sooooo good I couldn't resist!

ALSO Passion's Tide is free again for another 5 days on Amazon! It has been downloaded over 40,000 times all over the world, and it has 4.6 stars. So get a copy if you haven't already :)

Chicken, lemon, artichoke, hearts, chokes, lemon zest, basil, skillet, easy, weeknight, weekend, onions, garlic, one pot, cast iron, food network, giada, italian, savory

A few months back, when I was trying to eat healthier to lost a few pounds for my cruise (which I quickly gained back ON the cruise) I found a recipe for a one-skillet meal with artichoke hearts, chicken breast, garlic, and lemons. Yum. Problem is, it's not very attractive.

Chicken, lemon, artichoke, hearts, chokes, lemon zest, basil, skillet, easy, weeknight, weekend, onions, garlic, one pot, cast iron, food network, giada, italian, savory

When you brown chicken and onions and garlic in a cast iron skillet, then scrape all that brown gunk to make the sauce, everything turns....well, brown. ...continue reading

As a kid there was only one type of potato I would eat: Arby's curly fries. And that was because they could barely be called potatoes. To me, a carb-a-holic and veggie-phobic, potatoes were lumped in with peas and carrots and other nasty things my mother could not persuade me to eat.

When I discovered garlic mashed potatoes 3 years ago, I wanted to kick myself. 21 years of living without potatoes? What a waste!

Now these starchy spuds are a regular part of my diet, in various forms. And my new favorite are these roasted, golden brown, flavorful fries.
