Drink

Ignore the less-than-awesome picture and go make this drink. It's basically an oatmeal cookie shot...but bigger.

What's an oatmeal cookie shot, you say?

Well...It's heaven. It's a mix of equal parts baileys, goldshlager, and butterscotch shnapps. When you shoot it, it tastes exactly like an oatmeal cookie. But better, because there aren't any raisins to disappoint you.

So to make it into a martini, we just added a touch of milk. You can also add a dash of jager if you want some licorice spice added...but that shit's gross. In my opinion. So leave the jager to the bros, and relax with a deliciously sweet (and incredibly strong!) drink.

  • 1 oz irish cream (like Baileys)
  • 1 oz cinnamon shnapps (like goldshlager, or a cheaper one because it's crazy expensive. Beth had some fireball whiskey laying around, so we used that.)
  • 1 oz butterscotch snhapps (like...I don't know any brand names)
  • 1/2 oz milk
  • cinnamon and sugar to rim glass

Wet the rim of a martini glass with water and dip it onto a plate with cinnamon and sugar several times. In a cocktail shaker, combine all the ingredients and shake over ice. Pour into sugar-rimmed glass.

gummy bear, martini, drink, alcohol, steve, monkey, talking, cloudy with a chance of meatballs, 2, themed, fun, party, drink, sweet, sprite, vodka, gummy bearsI am a giant kid.

With the budget of a 25 year old who has a moderately successful entry level job with a solid paycheck, who can afford to buy all the candy she wants.

And I have no shame in going to see kid's movies on a Friday night, when other people my age are out partying or clubbing or whatever normal people do.

Doctor who, BBC, Matt smith, David Tennant, Dr. Who, sci fi, cocktail, drink, sonic, screwdriver, alcoholic, nerd, geek, dork

Disclaimer: I have been attempting for some time now to keep my blog from falling into a single niche...one of geekiness. But I cannot hold back any longer, I will be posting a lot of nerdy things in the upcoming weeks, and if that's not something you're interested in, well, maybe just appreciate the amount of work that goes into creating these dorky meals!

Doctor Who has, and will continue to be, my favorite show for a long, long time. I was first introduced to it by Netflix, when it kept recommending it to me based on my preferences. Within episodes, I was hooked.

Like the X-files (an old favorite of mine, I own all 9 seasons and both movies), the show has everything. Danger, adventure, monsters, aliens, romance, humor, and of course, attractive male leads :)

I am in love with the current doctor, played by Matt Smith. But my doctor has always been David Tennant.

Ironically enough, when I started working with Kevin, he was too shy to initiate conversation. And, being the newbie, I was too intimidated by his lush beard to talk to him. I mean, he could have been like 40 or something. But then he showed up to work wearing a Matt Smith shirt, and I pretty much refused to leave him alone after that. And we've been dating for over a year now, so thanks Doctor Who!

It was perfect that his spring break coincide with with the start of this season of Doctor Who! And we decided that in preparation for the big night, we would whip up some awesome themed goodies. I'll spread the rest of them out to last the season, but here's one that will certainly whet your appetite...

Hulk, shots, jello shots, alcohol, drinks, glasses, theme, avengers, Marvel, party, food, easy, fun, Captain America, Thor, Loki, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Tony Stark, Radiation, Hulk Smash,

Oh hey everyone, it's been awhile. Hope you all had wonderful thanksgivings, I know I did! Before I get into these too-cute-for-words painted shot glasses that I made for an Avengers party, a few announcements.

1. My book was free for five days on Amazon (I hope you all got your free copies!), and I sold a mind-boggling 16,000 copies. Yeah. That's insane. The promotion ended, but it's still only $2.99, so definitely affordable. And though I made zero dollars from the promotions (bye bye, imaginary $33 grand), the reviews are starting to roll in. For a self-published first time author, there is no greater buzz than reading another 5 star review!

2. I successfully "won" NanoWrimo this year, meaning that I wrote 50,000 words in the month of November. While my second book isn't finished yet, I've gotten more than half of it done already! I won't go into details, but I will leave you with this tantalizing hint: there is a lot of cooking involved, and maybe even a few recipes :)

3. I bought a new lens...it's glorious and I cannot wait to play with it! How did a rash decision to make a blog turn into an obsession with photography and cooking?!

But back to the Avengers!!! When I heard that my friend Beth (Whom I've known since 6th grade!!!) hadn't seen the Avengers or Thor yet, I was in shock. I mean...

Yum.

Being the cooking nerds that we are, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to make some awesome themed food for our (small) party. Here is what we came up with:

Hulk, shots, jello shots, alcohol, drinks, glasses, theme, avengers, Marvel, party, food, easy, fun, Captain America, Thor, Loki, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Tony Stark, Radiation, Hulk Smash,

  • Thor's Hammer appetizers
  • Hulk Jello Shots
  • Captain America Cupcakes
  • Iron Man Pizza (not shown because it fell off the pizza stone and got all smushed)

These aren't really recipes as much as a bunch of ideas for your own Avengers party.

Hulk, Captain America, Cupcakes, shots, jello shots, alcohol, drinks, glasses, theme, avengers, Marvel, party, food, easy, fun, Captain America, Thor, Loki, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Tony Stark, Radiation, Hulk Smash,

To make Thor's hammers, we cubed pepperoni, summer sausage, and cheese. We wanted to use sharp cheddar, but found that the softer monterey jack worked better with the pretzel rods and cracked less often.

Hulk, shots, jello shots, alcohol, drinks, glasses, theme, avengers, Marvel, party, food, easy, fun, Captain America, Thor, Captain America, Hammer, Shield,Loki, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Tony Stark, Radiation, Hulk Smash,

For the adorable Captain America cupcakes, Beth brought simple vanilla cupcakes swirled with red and blue food coloring, and we topped them with circles of colored fondant. Three cheers for her engineering degree and her makeshift star fondant cutter!

Hulk, shots, jello shots, alcohol, drinks, glasses, theme, avengers, Marvel, party, food, easy, fun, Captain America, Thor, Loki, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Tony Stark, Radiation, Hulk Smash,

Ok, these are probably the cutest things I've made. And yes, I did spend an hour painting shotglasses for a three person party. And I don't even like jello shots!

But what I did was take a dozen or so clean, plain shot glasses. Then I traced this adorable angry hulk face (template from CuteasaFox.com) and made a stencil out of cardboard. Then, using a small brush and black acrylic paint, I colored in the stencil.

Hulk, shots, jello shots, alcohol, drinks, glasses, theme, avengers, Marvel, party, food, easy, fun, Captain America, Thor, Loki, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Tony Stark, Radiation, Hulk Smash,

And the best part about the painted shot glasses? You throw them in the dishwasher and the paint comes right off, leaving me with a dozen blank canvasses for my next party. I'm sure you could seal the design on there permanently if you wanted to, but I love the re-useability (that isn't a word, is it?) of them. Hell, I might start painting all of my glasses!

Hulk, shots, jello shots, alcohol, drinks, glasses, theme, avengers, Marvel, party, food, easy, fun, Captain America, Thor, Loki, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Tony Stark, Radiation, Hulk Smash,

The recipe itself is simple: I followed the directions on the box of lime jello (dissolve in hot water, add cold water, etc) and then added about a half cup of Smirnoff Tuscan Lemonade and a dash of plain UV vodka for an extra kick.

Hulk, shots, jello shots, alcohol, drinks, glasses, theme, avengers, Marvel, party, food, easy, fun, Captain America, Thor, Loki, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Tony Stark, Radiation, Hulk Smash,

Then you slip them into the fridge for a few hours, and voila! Look how cute his little angry face is! Haha.

To be honest though, I would have preferred to just have regular shots instead of jello shots. I ended up eating them out of the glasses with a spoon, because the slimy feeling of a huge cube of jello slowly moving down my esophagus makes me gag.

But anyway, there you have it! Adorable Avengers party food for your next Marvel party. Now if you'll excuse me, I have another 50,000 words to write so I can finish my second book! :)

jelly bean, drink, cocktail, martini, UV blue, blue, lemonade, sweet, tart, easy, fun, colorful, jellybean, rainbow, candy, sugar, easter, drink, party, sweet tart

Let me start of with a bit of an explanation for this concoction.

My brother-in-law, Matt, is without a doubt one of the funniest people I know. He's also incredibly neurotic and obsessive about certain things, which is why, when he decided to buy some jelly beans, he didn't half-ass the job.

Apparently he purchased about ten varieties of easter jellybeans, and did a blind taste test with my sister. The result was that Sweet Tart jellybeans had the best texture AND flavor.

When he told this story to Kevin and me earlier this year, we rolled our eyes and nodded our heads. Later, in the car, we discussed how insane he was. But when I saw a bag of them at the store, I bought them on a whim.

Oh.

My.

God.

From March-April, Kevin and I were averaging about 2 bags a week. I would make several trips to the convenience store during my lunch breaks to get my fix, and all of my teeth fell out. Ok, I lied about the last part, but I am not lying about the intense jelly bean cravings.

For example, this is one of my victory photos after an especially impressive Rite-Aid haul.  And to put it into perspective, this was my pre-easter stash. The Monday following Easter Sunday I went into full-out panic mode, and drove around to every store, buying out their supplies to stock up on my beans. I managed to score about 15 bags, hopefully enough to last me until Easter.

And if you think that's bad, my brother-in-law is hoarding over 30 bags of these.

I'm not proud of this addiction, and went I look at the cupboard overflowing with candy, I'm a little ashamed. And when you have over 12 pounds of sugar, you start thinking of things to do with it.

Hence, the jelly bean-tini. ...continue reading

hurricane, rum, dark rum, malibu, lime juice, simple sugar, mixed drinks, fruity, easy, bartending, orange, lime, cherry

I've been wanting for awhile to start posting drink recipes on this blog. I'm 23 years old, and although I live at home still (I know, I know), I do occasionally like to have a couple of drinks. My only problem is that I have a very sensitive palette that can't stand anything bitter or dry. So that rules out beer unfortunately. Apparently it's an acquired taste, but I've been trying to acquire it for several years now, and I still make a disgusted face when I drink it.

With beer (and any dry wines) out of the picture, my sweet tooth leads me to crave the fruitiest, girliest drinks imaginable. Usually I get vodka mixed drinks, but I've always been a fan of rum as well. So when Kevin suggested making hurricanes to go with our New Orleans themed dinner, I didn't hesitate to agree. ...continue reading
